Once a symbol of industry, the Washington Mills property sat dormant for decades. Now, with vision, collaboration, and careful planning, it’s poised to become a hub for recreation, connection, and community gatherings.
Madison-Mayodan Plan
The Town of Mayodan, in partnership with Destination by Design is leading this effort to reimagine the site as a riverfront park that honors the area’s history while inspiring its future.

Planning
a Park
Early plans include transforming one of the historic warehouses through a public-private partnership to bring new life into the space and anchor an expansive community green — a place where farmers markets, concerts, and town events can thrive. The park will also feature walking trails, pickleball courts, and direct access to the river.
“Reactivating this property means more than just creating a park,” said Holly Waterman, one of Destination by Design’s landscape architects. “It’s about giving people access to the river again and creating a destination that brings energy back to this part of Mayodan.”
The Washington Mills Park is part of a broader regional effort by Mayodan and Madison to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities and foster economic vitality through tourism and placemaking. It’s another step in redefining Rockingham County as a destination where natural beauty, community spirit, and recreation come together.
For Mayodan, this is more than a park project — it’s the start of a new chapter in the story of a river town rediscovering its flow.
