Last week I took a day to ride a long stretch of the New River Rail Trail from Fries, Virginia to Galax, Virginia. I had never ridden this particular stretch of the trail before and wanted to see what the trail was like between Fries and the large bridge that takes the trail over the New River. The trailhead at Fries was well maintained and the trail from there to the bridge provides excellent views of the river. The bridge itself is starting to show its age, loose boards and wobbly side-railings and all.

I eventually connected to Galax where I stopped at Creek Bottom Brewing for lunch, and immediately the planning brain went into action. Galax could stand to improve bike/ped access throughout town. Dodging cars on your bike to get back to the trail is not always what you want with a belly full of burger.
